The massive Sand Fire is now at 65 percent containment after charring nearly 60 square miles in the Santa Clarita area, officials said. By Thursday morning, the blaze had scorched 38,346 acres, authorities said. The containment is up from just 40 percent on Wednesday. A total of 2,937 firefighters are battling the blaze, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The wildfire prompted the evacuation of at least 10,000 homes, although late Monday, officials allowed most evacuees to return to their homes. At least 18 homes have been destroyed. Temperatures hit 101 degrees in the area and dried brush from the parched, drought conditions has helped to spread the fire to about 57 square miles. Helicopters circled the blaze, dousing flames with water. Cal Fire helicopters flew back and forth between the ocean, where they collected water, and the Santa Clarita area, where they dumped the water on the fire lines. The fire also burned parts of the Sable Ranch, where many movies and TV shows were shot, reducing film sets to charred piles of burnt wood and metal.
